Sharks vs Oilers 160324

It’s Star Wars night, and the Sharks hope to explode the death star of missing the playoffs by clinching against the Oilers.

The Sharks played good defensive hockey (only giving up one goal), but were unable to solve Elliott.  They even got a three-man advantage by pulling the goalie late in the game on a two-man power play, but never having worked on that in practice, things did not go as well as hoped, and the Sharks were shut out.

Vlasic and Tennyson are still out.

The Oilers have a long list of wounded, some who won’t play for the rest of the season. Maroon may be back on Thursday.  Oilers lost 4-2 over the Coyotes on Tuesday; Oilers haven’t beat the Coyotes (in regulation) in 23 games.  Thursday will be the first time Shark fans can see McDavid in person; he’s contributed to about half of the Oilers’ goals since January All-Star break. Excluding McDavid and Draisaitl, Coach McLellan is exasperated with his forwards.

Polak and the Sharks are not out for revenge/payback against the Oilers’ Nurse, as they’d rather win the game (and clinch the playoff berth).  But he may be the subject of some physicality, but isn’t worried.

If the alternating goalie thing continues, Reimer will be up.

Jones was nearly perfect (new career high of 47 saves), 3rd Star of the Week Burns had a Gordie Howe hat trick; and Pavelski got his 30th goal of the season, and his first regular season over time goal, as the winner.

On to Edmonton.  The Oilers fans may be more likely to play the fan-created draft lottery  simulator, or dream of outdoor glory, than watch a hockey game with a number of players on the shelf.

Reimer is the likely starter for the Sharks, in this back-to-back situation.  Unlikely there will be a morning skate.  Karlsson returned to the line up last night (Haley sat); Wingels and Tennyson probably still out.

Sharks pushed ahead through some power plays to take a commanding lead, then hang on while the Flames were unable to tie it up in regulation.  Another two-game road trip with 100% of the points in the bank.

With the Sharks’ 41st game in the books, Raffi Torres has finished his suspension.  Zubrus was put on IR so Torres could be put on the NHL active roster. Torres was then assigned to the AHL Barracuda on a conditioning stint and could make his season debut in the midwest as the Barracuda finish up a 3-game road trip in Rockford, IL and Des Moines, Iowa this week.  (Next Barracuda home game is 1/18 in the afternoon, followed by a Sharks game that evening.)

Now, the Sharks former coach comes to SAP Center for the first time this season. Edmonton is sitting last in the division and conference, with 38 points. Wünderkind Connor McDavid and Oscar Klefbom are on the IR and won’t be back until after the ASG.  Nail Yakupov could return Thursday from a sprained ankle.  But the Oilers have not fully “turned things around” to go from pretender to contender status in the league.

The Sharks are currently 3rd in the division, with 44 points, in 41 games; they have games in hand on every team in the league but two.  So the Sharks need to win those in-hand games to rise up the standings.

Guessing it may be Jones in net for the Sharks.

A rusty Couture was not enough to counter the tide of Calgary’s offense. Jones was pulled after giving up four goals (even though the last was disallowed for being offside).

Sharks face their former coach for the first time. Jones back in net.  Edmonton looking at how tight the standings are and hoping to climb the division rankings with a win (their 4th in a row).  Sharks are hoping not to have a fifth sequential loss.

Sharks were fortunate to get a point tonight.  Multiple times of “passing” puck to defense who were in the process of changing.  Giving up the tying goal with a defenseman without a stick.  So many little details that were overlooked/not addressed.

Congratulations to Joe Thornton on his 600th assist as a Shark (joins three other Hall of Famers who did the same after being traded).

Desjardins took a puck to the hand and did not return to play after that.

More later, maybe.

Sharks have won three straight against some of the top teams of the Western Conference.  Now, they face one of the worse in the league, the Edmonton Oilers.  The Sharks have had some mental hiccups not playing as well as they can when facing teams below them in the standings.

This game will be more of a mental challenge to see if they can play as they have the past three games, but still with the physical edge they need to succeed, rather than playing down to the level of their opponent.

McGinn and Hannan did not skate on Sunday and may be game time decisions.

The Oilers flew into Oakland after playing in Calgary Saturday, and took the day off, but Hall took a spin to test out his legs returning from injury; he might be available Monday night. They are 4-6-0 in their last ten games; they lost to Calgary after winning over Buffalo.

Only three games Monday.

Niemi vs Fasth.  Hall game time decision.  Hannan looks to be back in the lineup, and Kennedy in for McGinn.

Sharks had a slow start, fell behind in the first.  But rallied to lead in the second, only to fall behind (again).  In the final frame, the Sharks physicality finally came out and the Sharks scored two to win, holding off the Oilers late in the third (missed icing with 1.7 seconds notwithstanding).

Matt Tennyson notched his first NHL goal, the first former Junior Shark to do it for the NHL Sharks.

Sharks are now second in the Pacific Division with 40 points.

Sharks haven’t played since Saturday, with 3 game winning streak (and 6 game home winning streak). They had the day off Sunday (and team family party that evening), with practice Monday (with hospital visit), Tuesday (and team “Holiday Assist” party) and Wednesday. (13, 18, 81 and 83 have NOT been practicing. Nieto has been ruled out for game against Oilers; may not make it back into lineup before Christmas break. The other three are out “long” term it sounds like.)

The Oilers keep losing; losing streak now at five games. They lost Tuesday in Arizona, even after firing head coach Dallas Eakins on Monday, with GM Craig McTavish and AHL bench boss Todd Nelson taking the reins.  (Some pundits are calling for a wholesale firing of the “Old Boys Club” in Edmonton – including the entire scouting staff which has done a horrendous job drafting, the GM and most of the front office.) From the outside, not much has changed, and the status quo is not working.

Niemi starting; Scott in for McGinn. Scrivens in for Oilers.
