Back at it tonight.  A few repeating players from Friday, but a lot of the other guys too.

Jones getting his SAP Center debut (unclear if he’ll play a full game). Ward and Martin will also make their SAP Center debuts. Dell to back up.

Karlsson still on the mend; sounds like he might be ready for Tuesday’s game.

Ducks won at home over the Kings Friday night.  Had their morning skate in SoCal before flying north for tonight’s game.

Recap. Sharks owned first.  Ducks came out aggressive in 2nd, and owned 3rd.  Sharks underestimated their opponent (Ducks >>>>>> Coyotes). Sharks seemed to get complacent after that five minute PK and were not as tight defensively.

Sharks host the Coyotes on Friday.  This is the first home preseason game.

On Thursday, DeBoer indicated that Stalock is scheduled to start, playing the full game. Thornton and Pavelski haven’t yet played in preseason games, so might be in the line up. Karlsson is recovering from a minor injury, and it is not planned he’ll participate in either game this weekend. Torres is skating, but no news on his insertion into a preseason lineup.

Meanwhile, in the desert, the Coyotes had an intrasquad game for their fans on Thursday.  They’ll fly to San Jose Friday morning for the game.

Line ups for tonight can be seen here.

Looks like Donskoi will be skating with Pavelski and Thornton tonight; Torres in.  No John Scott for Arizona.

Postgame thoughts: While Torres started with the Joes, he ended up on the 4th line most of the night. He did get in a big, thundering hit early in the game, but postgame indicated that he’s still getting into “game shape”.

Donskoi was a giveaway-machine in the early part of the game, but by the end showed his explosive speed, was keeping more control of the puck, forechecking,  more successful board battles, and was rewarded with a goal and an assist. Named 2nd star of the game.  Definitely giving the coaching staff more to look at when considering the opening night roster.

DeMelo also impressed.  Offensively, notched a goal and an assist.  Displayed good positional play. Named 1st star of the game.  Definitely improved his chances to make his NHL debut with the season opening roster.

Goldobin continued to impress, even not being on the top line.  The “80’s trio” of Tennyson, Goldobin and Nieto had a nice shift during the mandated 3×3 OT.

Meier, in an unflashy way, is  continuing to show good play as an 18-year old potential NHL rookie.  He definitely has the size to play in the NHL. It may just be a question of where he’d fit in the lineup and would he get better minutes to improve playing in CHL?

The Sharks did surrender their first PPG of the preseason (first in regulation, only the second of preseason).  PK is much improved from last year.  And two more PPGs scored.

Very good to see such an improvement on the defensive side, which was horrendous at times last season.

Right back at it.  This time, facing the Canucks at their home rink in Vancouver.

Some of the players from Monday will be playing in the back-to-back, but a lot will be different.  (My guess — some of the rookies/prospects will; and not all the “vets” who didn’t play last night will.)

Pregame update: five vets didn’t even travel to Canada for these two games. Expect the new guys to play tonight (Martin Jones, Paul Martin, Joel Ward).

Reaction — Martin Jones gets shutout win.  4 goals, including 2 on the PPG.  And some of the young kids looking real good.  That felt a lot better than this time last night!

Training Camp Day 4: Hockeyville game (150921)

TV: CSN CA, NHL Network
Satellite radio (click for specific station — may be Vancouver feed only)
Sharks Radio Network (streamed online only) – direct link

On Sunday afternoon, nearly the entire camp (staff and players) headed to Canada. On Monday, part of the group will participate in the 2015 Canada Kraft Hockeyville game (televised locally on CSN-California; nationally on NHL Network, Rogers in Canada). The group will stay in Canada for a game Tuesday in Vancouver at Rogers Place.  DeBoer indicated that some players would participate in both games.  But as of Sunday night, no list of which players went to Canada, nor who will be playing, has been released.

This game is a celebration of grass roots hockey. Locals who have gone on to hockey stardom include the Benn brothers.

While the team will have an opportunity to enjoy the small (attendance-wise) rink, they can be reminded of the fun they had in their (small) home town rink as they play.  But on the serious side, this is an opportunity for players to impress the coaches and scouts to position themselves for the hockey season, on the NHL roster, etc.

First of seven preseason games.  First of four road/away preseason games.

Sharks reporting via Twitter lines will be Hertl-Tierney-Wingels, Nieto-Smith-Goodrow, Goldobin-Carpenter-Meier, Sadowy-Lerg-Brown. D pairs Dillon-Tennyson, Mueller-DeMello, Young-Roy. Grosenick starting, backed up by Dell.

RECAP:  Grosenick played the first half of the game, replaced by Dell.  Neither goalie gave up a goal in regulation.  It was tied 0-0 after regulation, so we saw the first 3×3 OT.  A few shifts in and the Canucks scored.  Wingels and Dillon wore As; Wingels took the ceremonial faceoff.

It seemed like there was a missing gear offensively, but the Hertl-Tierney-Wingels seemed to work well. Dillon-Tennyson was a responsible pair.

The team seemed to relish the excitement of the Hockeyville celebration, including those who did not play (many watched the game from suites).

Technical notes – first period there was no game clock on the TV.  Just the basic stats of total SOG I’ve been able to find.  Nothing else.

Rookie scrimmages 150912 and 150913 — Ducks @ Sharks

Sharks host the Ducks in a pair of scrimmages this weekend.  (Games have nominally been two periods of 30-minute running clock. Instead, it was a full 60 minute game, with 3 ice-cleaning stops/period.)

This is a chance for the prospects to impress their prospective NHL head coaches, scouts, and fans, and to play against rivals rather than teammates.

  • Sharks roster (pdf)
Six of the players are tryouts, plus one unsigned, previously-drafted player. Six players are undrafted signees, one a trade acquisition.  The remaining eleven are drafted players, including the first round picks from 2014 (Goldobin) and 2015 (Meier).  No player has more than 10 AHL games.

Recap 150912

My notes: Rumpel played the full game, making some nice fast stops.  Ryan wore the C.

D pairings (not reflecting which side players play):  63-64, 76-81, 51-47

Lines (not reflecting forward positions): 56-79-72, 53-52-28, 60-27-82 (top line – scored all the goals), 95-96-76

Donskoi was the best skater out there, and he’s still getting used to the smaller ice. Definite candidate for NHL roster spot to start the season.

Power Play was ineffective, but Penalty Kill was strong (opening the scoring with SHG).

Sharks dominated first and third; Ducks the second.

Bergman “tweaked something” in 1st period, and did not return to play.  Sommer hopeful, it’s just a minor issue. (Per Merc’s Pashelka)

New goal song was debuted

Sharks game stats, 2014-15 season

Some interesting numbers looking at the season that was.

Unfortunately, you had less than a 50% chance of the team winning the game (with only 39 wins on the season). But a very good chance of seeing them score, as the team was shut out only three times all season. (And shut out their opponent 8 times.)

Importantly, you want to arrive at the game on time.  More than 25% of games had the first goal within the first five minutes; and half the games had a goal scored within the first ten minutes. (More than 80% of games had the first goal scored in the first period.  (Sharks scoring first in 42 games of the season.)

But, if the Sharks were behind and the meter was running on the baby sitter, it might be OK to leave. The Sharks only came back from a deficit in 13 games all season.

However, if the team was ahead, there was nearly 25% of a chance, they’d give up a tying and winning goal, losing the game.

The Sharks best intra-game goal advantage was five goals (happened once), but their worst was also five goals against (happened twice).

The Sharks scored a maximum of seven goals (median 2).  (And gave up a max of seven goals, median of 3.)

Sharks were 4-6 in the shootout.  And lost three times in OT.

Sharks incurred 302 penalties (to opponents 341), enduring an average of just under 6 minutes of penalty kill time, while enjoying more than 6:55 minutes of power play time (offsetting penalties notwithstanding).

Sharks scored 55 power play goals, but gave up 48 power play goals.  But even strength, the Sharks scored only 165 goals compared to 171 for their opponents.

In summary, the Sharks were an OK team, but not an elite team for the 2014-15 season.  It will take a good coaching staff AND the right mix of players to ensure the Sharks return to the playoffs and/or elite status.
