150205 – postgame Sharks @ Canucks

Pregame news/links

On Thursday, the Sharks took to the ice against the Canucks (they were 0-2 on the season) about 24 hours after they lost to the Flames in Calgary, barely avoiding a shutout.

For the Sharks, Mirco Mueller returned to the lineup, and Daniil Tarasov made his NHL debut, while Patrick Marleau played his 1,300th game.

Sharks’ Irwin started off the scoring in the first, and for the Canucks it went down hill from there, giving up two goals in each of the second and third periods, but eeking out a goal to avoid a shut out with less than two minutes left.

Karlsson continued his strong play, notching the GWG in the second. A high stick on Tarasov not called by refs (would have resulted in 4min PP). Vancouver had goal disallowed because it was batted in. Chris Tierney scored his first NHL goal.

McLellan is now at 299 NHL career coaching wins.

Sharks had six rookies in the lineup.

Team “off” on Friday.  (Back at it Saturday to host Carolina)

Sharks need to win to avoid dropping further in standings (and raising Canucks up).  Will Tarasov get his NHL debut?

Niemi assumed starter.  Unlikely there will be morning skate as it’s a back-to-back.

Tonight’s game should be Patrick Marleau’s 1300th. If so, he’ll be the youngest to reach that milestone, and one of only 11 to do so with one organization.

Mueller returns to Sharks lineup.

Sharks just did not put out as much effort with as much care/precision as the Canucks.

Best thing: Thornton notching a penalty shot (on the exact fifth anniversary of his previous penalty shot).

Sharks started the night tied with three other teams at 43 points, and ended it losing ground to multiple teams in the Pacific Division.

Hansen fined $5k for hit to Wingels’ head.

Back and forth game, mainly dominated by the team in black, but Sharks denied “puck luck” when the tying goal crossed the line after the final horn sounded.

Miller saved more the 30 shots, while Niemi gave up three goals on 19 shots.

Tyler Kennedy returned to action; had an assist on Sheppard’s goal.

Sharks have their longest break of the season to date — with four full days off between games.  A chance to practice, reconnect with families, before the final (of two) homestand game and heading out on the road for seven (in less than two weeks).

Meanwhile, the Canucks are surprising some pundits with how their season has turned around (after last year’s disaster).  On Tuesday, they’re in Arizona to play the Coyotes before heading to San Jose to play Thursday.  Former Sharks prospect Nick Bonino was acquired in trade this summer and is doing well for the Canucks.

Niemi looks to get the start for the Sharks.

140923 – Sharks-Canucks split games preseason/postgame

In the preseason split squad games against the Canucks, each team won one.

In Vancouver, Stalock had 15 saves, but Sharks lost 4-2.  Couture did not skate 3rd period, stayed out for precautionary reasons.

But in Stockton, the Sharks won 5-2, with Thornton notching two goals.  Goldobin had a pretty one as well, named first star. Pavelski and Goodrow had the other two Shark goals.  Former Shark prospect Bonino scored one for the other guys.

140923 Preseason Sharks @ Canucks / Canucks @ Sharks (Stockton) — pregame news/links

And so we will get a first glance into how the Sharks will play against the rest of the league with split squad games against the Vancouver Canucks.

Sharks will be making big cuts after the Tuesday split squad games, so it may be the last chance for junior players, rookies and some vets, to make a good impression to stick around for the rest of camp (and perhaps the NHL season opener).

Vancouver is coming off of a very disappointing season, not even making the playoffs.  First year coach Tortorella didn’t make it to a second year, replaced by Willie Desjardins who coached the AHL Texas Stars to win the AHL Calder Cup last season. Vancouver had their early training camp in Whistler, so this will be the first opportunity local Vancouver fans will have to see their team.

Check out the links below for how the teams will split their squads between the two venues for the games.

Sharks will have neither radio nor TV coverage.  Game in Vancouver joined in progress on NHL Network US.  (Unclear if there is any Vancouver radio coverage)

Initially posted circa 9/22 11:40pm.  Will be updated through day as news breaks.

(I apologize for any missing/bad links — and blame the felines of the house)
