Back at it tonight.  A few repeating players from Friday, but a lot of the other guys too.

Jones getting his SAP Center debut (unclear if he’ll play a full game). Ward and Martin will also make their SAP Center debuts. Dell to back up.

Karlsson still on the mend; sounds like he might be ready for Tuesday’s game.

Ducks won at home over the Kings Friday night.  Had their morning skate in SoCal before flying north for tonight’s game.

Recap. Sharks owned first.  Ducks came out aggressive in 2nd, and owned 3rd.  Sharks underestimated their opponent (Ducks >>>>>> Coyotes). Sharks seemed to get complacent after that five minute PK and were not as tight defensively.

Sharks host the Coyotes on Friday.  This is the first home preseason game.

On Thursday, DeBoer indicated that Stalock is scheduled to start, playing the full game. Thornton and Pavelski haven’t yet played in preseason games, so might be in the line up. Karlsson is recovering from a minor injury, and it is not planned he’ll participate in either game this weekend. Torres is skating, but no news on his insertion into a preseason lineup.

Meanwhile, in the desert, the Coyotes had an intrasquad game for their fans on Thursday.  They’ll fly to San Jose Friday morning for the game.

Line ups for tonight can be seen here.

Looks like Donskoi will be skating with Pavelski and Thornton tonight; Torres in.  No John Scott for Arizona.

Postgame thoughts: While Torres started with the Joes, he ended up on the 4th line most of the night. He did get in a big, thundering hit early in the game, but postgame indicated that he’s still getting into “game shape”.

Donskoi was a giveaway-machine in the early part of the game, but by the end showed his explosive speed, was keeping more control of the puck, forechecking,  more successful board battles, and was rewarded with a goal and an assist. Named 2nd star of the game.  Definitely giving the coaching staff more to look at when considering the opening night roster.

DeMelo also impressed.  Offensively, notched a goal and an assist.  Displayed good positional play. Named 1st star of the game.  Definitely improved his chances to make his NHL debut with the season opening roster.

Goldobin continued to impress, even not being on the top line.  The “80’s trio” of Tennyson, Goldobin and Nieto had a nice shift during the mandated 3×3 OT.

Meier, in an unflashy way, is  continuing to show good play as an 18-year old potential NHL rookie.  He definitely has the size to play in the NHL. It may just be a question of where he’d fit in the lineup and would he get better minutes to improve playing in CHL?

The Sharks did surrender their first PPG of the preseason (first in regulation, only the second of preseason).  PK is much improved from last year.  And two more PPGs scored.

Very good to see such an improvement on the defensive side, which was horrendous at times last season.

And they rested.

Day off today after nearly a week straight of medicals, practices, scrimmages, and two preseason games.

Hearing that Rourke Chartier has been returned to his WHL team.  (Expecting that others may be returning to their respective CHL teams, and/or assigned to AHL camp. Those requiring waivers need to wait until like Sunday for assignment as that’s when the waiver period starts.)

Sharks cut four from camp roster.  Rumpel to AHL. Chartier, Roy and Sadowy back to their respective CHL teams.

Right back at it.  This time, facing the Canucks at their home rink in Vancouver.

Some of the players from Monday will be playing in the back-to-back, but a lot will be different.  (My guess — some of the rookies/prospects will; and not all the “vets” who didn’t play last night will.)

Pregame update: five vets didn’t even travel to Canada for these two games. Expect the new guys to play tonight (Martin Jones, Paul Martin, Joel Ward).

Reaction — Martin Jones gets shutout win.  4 goals, including 2 on the PPG.  And some of the young kids looking real good.  That felt a lot better than this time last night!

Training Camp Day 4: Hockeyville game (150921)

TV: CSN CA, NHL Network
Satellite radio (click for specific station — may be Vancouver feed only)
Sharks Radio Network (streamed online only) – direct link

On Sunday afternoon, nearly the entire camp (staff and players) headed to Canada. On Monday, part of the group will participate in the 2015 Canada Kraft Hockeyville game (televised locally on CSN-California; nationally on NHL Network, Rogers in Canada). The group will stay in Canada for a game Tuesday in Vancouver at Rogers Place.  DeBoer indicated that some players would participate in both games.  But as of Sunday night, no list of which players went to Canada, nor who will be playing, has been released.

This game is a celebration of grass roots hockey. Locals who have gone on to hockey stardom include the Benn brothers.

While the team will have an opportunity to enjoy the small (attendance-wise) rink, they can be reminded of the fun they had in their (small) home town rink as they play.  But on the serious side, this is an opportunity for players to impress the coaches and scouts to position themselves for the hockey season, on the NHL roster, etc.

First of seven preseason games.  First of four road/away preseason games.

Sharks reporting via Twitter lines will be Hertl-Tierney-Wingels, Nieto-Smith-Goodrow, Goldobin-Carpenter-Meier, Sadowy-Lerg-Brown. D pairs Dillon-Tennyson, Mueller-DeMello, Young-Roy. Grosenick starting, backed up by Dell.

RECAP:  Grosenick played the first half of the game, replaced by Dell.  Neither goalie gave up a goal in regulation.  It was tied 0-0 after regulation, so we saw the first 3×3 OT.  A few shifts in and the Canucks scored.  Wingels and Dillon wore As; Wingels took the ceremonial faceoff.

It seemed like there was a missing gear offensively, but the Hertl-Tierney-Wingels seemed to work well. Dillon-Tennyson was a responsible pair.

The team seemed to relish the excitement of the Hockeyville celebration, including those who did not play (many watched the game from suites).

Technical notes – first period there was no game clock on the TV.  Just the basic stats of total SOG I’ve been able to find.  Nothing else.

Training Camp day 3 (150920)

Sad news came out Saturday night: Former Shark Todd Ewen is dead at the age of 49.  Todd played one season, 51 games, with the Sharks before retiring. Death has been classified as a suicide. (AP obit, SJ Merc WTC, OCR, GHL, Yahoo, NBC)

Sunday features a scrimmage between the two groups at Sharks camp.  Sunday afternoon, they’ll board a plane for Victoria Island, BC, in preparation for the Hockeyville game Monday night.

Team teal included: Dell, Jones. Martin-Burns; McNally-Roy; Tennyson-Mueller; Ryan. Thornton-Pavelski-Hertl; Tierney-Wingels-Nieto; Lerg-McCarthy-Brown; Donskoi, Meier, Emmanuelsson. Coaches: Ricci, Sommer.

Team white included: Grosenick, Stalock. Braun-Vlasic; Dillon-DeMelo; Stollery-Young; Bergman. Marleau-Couture-Ward; Goldobin-Smith-Barclary; Chartier-Sadowy-Langlois; Helewka-Haley-Jevpalovs. Coaches: Robinson, Mougenel.

(There was no team breakdown listing provided, so I apologize for any errors.)

Scrimmage was two 25-minute running clock periods and 7-minute 3×3 Overtime.

In the first period, Marleau scored for team white and was answered by Donskoi of team teal; Jones and Stalock in nets. No scoring in the second period; but there was a disallowed goal from Meier (high stick); Dell and Grosenick in nets.  In the overtime, Couture scored for team white on the first shift.  Donskoi and McNally scored for team teal to win the game 3-2.

Overtime triplets included:  Nieto-Tierney-Burns vs Couture-Marleau-Vlasic. Thornton-Pavelski-Martin vs Smith-Goldobin-Braun. Wingels-Hertl-Tennyson vs DeMelo-Chartier-Langlois. Mueller-Donskoi-Lerg vs Couture-Ward-Dillon. Nieto-Meier-Ryan vs Stollery-Marleau-Couture. Roy-Pavelski-Thornton vs Vlasic-Chartier-Langlois. Wingels-McNally-? vs ?. Lerg-Hertl-Burns vs Smith-Goldobin-Marleau. (Bold are the goals scored)

Fun scrimmage.  Lots of fans cheering the goals (and one not-goal).  Lots of energy and some physicality.

CSN Sharks: Sharks scrimmage day before preseason opener

Training Camp day 2 (150919)

Another day of split practicing of the camp.  There was one change – Sadowy joined to group B (to even things up).

Defensive pairs are very fluid with lots of changes during drills, so really hard to confirm all pairs.  In one drill two players would be together, and in the next, they’d each be skating with a different partner.  My guess is that at Sunday’s scrimmage, there might be more “stability.”

The lines seem more set, and were the same as yesterday.

If you figured that competition was stiff at this camp for a 23-man NHL roster, I’m hearing that the NHL team may be looking at a 21-man roster with the AHL team across the hall, which will mean even more hard decisions.  (Guessing that the team would go with at least 22 when on a cross-country trip.) That would allow the team to save a lot more cap space for later in the season.

CEO John Tortora stopped by practice and was handing out (upperbowl) tickets to some of next weekend’s preseason games, so a number of lucky fans will be able to attend those games.  Hearing that there are a number of sponsors — some new, some old/returning — to be announced soon.  And a hunger-ending promotion returning? Stay tuned.

The Summer knows – Training Camp eve

One last caress
It’s time to dress
For Fall…

Recapping off season ponderings:

And it’s here!  Training camp. First on ice session will be Friday morning.

New coach DeBoer promises a clean slate, which is both good and bad.  If you had a bad season, new reasons to play your best.  If you’ve been at the top of the game, you have to prove yourself again.  And the new players to the organization have to show the coaching staff their abilities and how they’ll fit in.

So, where are we, what might the NHL roster look like at the start of the season?  Who’ll be in the AHL?  Or who won’t be playing pro with the Sharks?

To start, realize that the organization prides itself on merit promotions.  IOW, how you play will rank you in the depth chart, get you ice time and a NHL roster spot.

But if you’re an experienced NHL player on a one-way contract, what might that mean for your future with the organization if you’ve dropped down the depth chart?  The organization must consider the roster count (max 23), NHL contract count (max 50+CHL slideable) and the cap implications of any move. The cap for the upcoming season is $71.4m. This season, a player on a one-way contract gets a $925k cap exemption if assigned to the AHL; for example, if a player had a $1m contract, and was assigned to the AHL, there would be a residual $75k hit against the NHL cap; if the cap hit was $600k, there would be no residual NHL cap implications. And if a player has to be assigned to the AHL, is he exempt from waivers, or might he be picked up by another NHL team?

Here are some cap numbers from General Fanager.  And here is my determination of players’ waiver exemption status.

Another wrinkle is the handful of CHL-eligible players who will turn 20 by the end of the calendar year. They can be signed by the NHL Sharks, and play in either the NHL or AHL.  Or their rights will be retained until at least next spring if unsigned and returned to their respective CHL teams, as an “over ager”. These include F Helewka (’15 draftee), F Labanc (’14 draftee), F Schoenborn (’14 draftee) and D Vanier (’14 draftee).  (Update:  All but Helewka returned to their respective junior team 9/17. Sharks retain their rights until June 1, 2016; so if the organization decides to sign them it will be by then.)

There are also two signed draftees, Chartier and Meier, than can only play in the NHL or have to return to the CHL (and their contracts slide).

The organization has indicated that players in the NHL will play.  So, that if a young player isn’t getting a lot of ice time if on the NHL roster, he may end up in the AHL for playing time.

So, who “will” make the NHL squad?  Who “might” make the NHL roster?

My guess?

Goalies: Jones, Stalock
Unless Grosenick vastly outplays Stalock, this should be the season starting pair.

Defense: Braun, Burns, Dillon, Martin, Mueller, Tennyson, Vlasic  Mueller (still on ELS) has multiple years of waiver exemption remaining.  Tennyson would have to clear waivers to play in AHL. DeMelo is mentioned as someone who might make the team.

Forwards: Brown, Couture, Goodrow, Hertl, Karlsson, Marleau, Nieto, Pavelski, Smith, Thornton, Tierney, Torres, Ward, Wingels
Hertl, Karlsson and Nieto are nearly out of waiver exemption. Goodrow and Tierney have some waiver years left. A few of the 3rd/4th liners might end up plying their trade elsewhere (potentially Brown, Nieto, Smith, Torres).  Donskoi has been a revelation and I believe will unseat someone in the depth chart. Goldobin seems to be penciled in for the NHL roster.

Definitely a year where the competition will be fierce for a NHL roster spot.  And well worth keeping an eye on what’s happening at training camp.
