Series preview: Round 1 – Sharks vs Kings

The Kings and Sharks face each other for the fourth time in the playoffs.  Kings have won two series (both seven games), Sharks have won one (six games).  Sharks won the 15-16 regular season series 3-2.

Kings ended the regular season on a bit of a slump (4-5-1 in last ten), losing out on winning the division.  The word that comes up in many of the series previews is that the Kings play “heavy,” a factor that many pundits claim will be the difference in the series. Kings led the league in hits with 2495 (30.4/game). And  they missed the playoffs last season.  They have a few banged up players who may miss the start of the series.  They have two Stanley Cups for the franchise.

The Sharks were two games under 0.500 at home, but led the league in wins on the road (including an early season 6-0 road trip).  They ended the season on a 5-5-0 run, coming up shy for division lead or even 2nd.  The Sharks also missed the playoffs last year.  They added a better goalie (tandem) and some veteran experience and leadership.  There’s even a new coach.

But what does all that mean for the series?  Well, most pundits are picking the series to go to seven games (regardless of the winning team), and one of the most watchable/sexy of the opening round series.

In my heart of hearts, I dream of the Sharks so dominating the Kings they sweep the series, busting the brackets of many.

It will be a hatred-filled, physical series.  It could be decided based on quality of depth.  (Interesting tidbit — if the Sharks’ AHL franchise, the San Jose Barracuda, make the Calder Cup playoffs, they’ll be facing the Kings’ AHL franchise, the Ontario Reign in the first round.  Hatred abounds.) Or the luck of the bouncing puck or (seemingly) capriciousness of officiating.  (With the Sharks having the better power play, the Kings may have to be on their best behavior to avoid tempting fate.)

With the majority of (EAST COAST) pundits not late night fans of California hockey, I take a lot of the pundits’ predictions and toss ’em.  They are based on stats (e.g., Kings are #1 in hits) and “ancient” (two seasons ago) events.  They forget that Sharks thrive in the deep waters, unseen, until they make their killing lunge; so too may these pundits be underestimating what the NHL Sharks have prepared themselves to do this post season.

The Sharks forwards average 6′ 1″, and 202.8 pounds; defense 6′ 2″ and 212.8.  The Kings forwards average an inch taller, 4 pounds heavier; their defense about 1/2″ taller, but average three pounds lighter (209.4).  Not an overwhelming difference (collectively).  Both teams have run the gauntlet of the Western Conference “Group of Death,” as well as the Sharks enduring the most grueling travel schedule of any NHL team this season.

Both teams know the effort it will take in the playoffs, and are willing combatants.  It comes down to will vs will on each side, with the physical ability (skill) to do so when the bruises get added on to every shift.

There are times I think the Sharks play better (challenge brings out the competitiveness) when the hits are hard/frequent and the teams well matched.  But I know they play the best when it’s every player participating and playing his best. It’ll be up to Captain Pavelski, the Sharks vets/leadership and Coach DeBoer to get that 18+2 cylinder (diesel) engine warmed up and ready to push through the toughest terrain/opponent to be the only team to sixteen wins this season.

Kings may have two Stanley Cups, but discount the Sharks and you’ll be chum.

Jones got the night off (more rest) and Reimer got another shutout, as the Sharks win 3-0 over the Wild.  (But the Predators beat the Avalanche in regulation, so the Wild backed into clinching their playoff berth.) Sharks max points 100, and with Ducks and Kings both at 99 points and facing each other tonight, one will get 101 points, meaning the Sharks cannot win the Pacific division.

Sharks still have a chance at 2nd in division.

Jones starting.  Zubrus out; Tierney in.  Neither Vlasic nor Nieto returning to the lineup (yet).

Sharks @ Wild 160405

Sharks win one against former Shark prospect Hutton and tied franchise win road record.   Now on to Minnesota for the last road game of the regular season.

Sharks and Wild have split the season series, so far.

Reimer scheduled to start for Sharks.  Sharks have the opportunity to set new franchise record for road wins.

Sharks gave up the first goal, came from behind TWICE, but scored three in the third to put an exclamation point on the game. Donskoi returned to play.

Sharks hit the road for one, opening up a home-and-home against the Canucks.

Canucks have lost their last two games. While not yet mathematically eliminated from the playoffs, in the seven remaining games, the Canucks are essentially playing for pride and jobs next season.  Markstrom starting for Canucks.

Reimer probable starter for Sharks.

Sharks vs Kings 160328

Third game in a row that the Sharks failed to clinch a playoff berth.  Will their luck change against the last team that defeated them in the playoffs?

The Stars scored 3 before the Sharks got their first.  4-2 loss.  And another miss at clinching that playoff berth.  And not one man advantage goal, with six attempts.

Sharks are celebration Chia Burns night (special ticket promotion)

Jones is starting.  Donskoi is a game time decision. Spaling out, Haley in.

Quick starting for Kings.

Sharks vs Stars 160326

Former Sharks on opponent: Travis Moen, Jason Demers, Antti Niemi; Tom Holy, PR

Sharks were 17-0 when leading 2-0, until Thursday.  Oilers’ Maroon indicated that the Sharks wilt with sustained forecheck (known thing), and the Sharks did not answer the challenge.  Definitely something the Sharks need to change or they won’t be long in the playoffs.

Recent signees Jon Martin and Michael Brodinski are now with the Barracuda (and scheduled to make their pro debuts Saturday night).

Dallas limps into San Jose to play their third/last game of a road trip: Russel is questionable; Seguin and Demers are out. The team lost 1-4 to the Coyotes Thursday night, but are 6-2-2 in their last ten. Stars are pushing to win the Central Division.

Donskoi was injured in Thursday’s game and is questionable to play.  Vlasic, Nieto and Tennyson out.  Jones is the scheduled starter.

And another interesting wrinkle:

And concern (for the Stars) with a slumping Niemi.

Sharks vs Oilers 160324

It’s Star Wars night, and the Sharks hope to explode the death star of missing the playoffs by clinching against the Oilers.

Former Sharks on opponent: head coach Todd McLellan and staff; TV analyst Drew Remenda

The Sharks played good defensive hockey (only giving up one goal), but were unable to solve Elliott.  They even got a three-man advantage by pulling the goalie late in the game on a two-man power play, but never having worked on that in practice, things did not go as well as hoped, and the Sharks were shut out.

Vlasic and Tennyson are still out.

The Oilers have a long list of wounded, some who won’t play for the rest of the season. Maroon may be back on Thursday.  Oilers lost 4-2 over the Coyotes on Tuesday; Oilers haven’t beat the Coyotes (in regulation) in 23 games.  Thursday will be the first time Shark fans can see McDavid in person; he’s contributed to about half of the Oilers’ goals since January All-Star break. Excluding McDavid and Draisaitl, Coach McLellan is exasperated with his forwards.

Polak and the Sharks are not out for revenge/payback against the Oilers’ Nurse, as they’d rather win the game (and clinch the playoff berth).  But he may be the subject of some physicality, but isn’t worried.

If the alternating goalie thing continues, Reimer will be up.

Sharks vs Blues 160322

Reimer was perfect against the Coyotes, getting his second shutout with the Sharks as Ward, Hertl and Pavelski got the goals past Smith, even defending strong through some 2-man disadvantages.

Elliot to start for the Blues, who shut out the Canucks 3-0 on Saturday, on his return from injury. The Blues are completing a five-game road trip.  The Blues are pushing for points to gain on division leading Dallas, two points ahead.

Sharks have won the two previous games against the Blues this season, and St Louis is hoping to improve their defense to avoid a season sweep.  On Star Wars night, the Sharks are hoping the Force is with them, and not that the Blues have the Schwartz with them.

Jones is possible as the starter Tuesday.  More after morning skate.
