The NHL had a 3 day break; the Sharks have been off for four.  Saturday morning, the Sharks will gather and fly to LA.

John Scott will not be available. He had a phone hearing Christmas Eve, and was suspended by the league four games for hitting unsuspecting Anaheim Ducks’ Jackman and knocking him flat on his keister.  The Sharks recalled forward Micheal Haley on Friday, for toughness, especially in the upcoming games against the Kings and Ducks.

Mirco Mueller won’t be available either; he’s been loaned to Team Switzerland in the IIHF World Junior Championships. Team Switzerland’s first game is on Saturday (they had a big win with Mueller getting assist; Noah Rod, Sharks 2nd round pick, had GWG and assist).

Appears to be Niemi vs Quick in net. Haley probably making Sharks debut tonight.

141222 – postgame Sharks @ Ducks

Pregame news/links

Ducks scored the winner on a power play influenced tally in OT.

Sharks did get a point (so, did the Kings), but the Ducks are now 8 points ahead.

Melker Karlsson scored his first NHL goal, and Pavelski now has three goals against the Ducks in three games.

Controversy over Scott hit that knocked out Jackman.  May result in supplemental discipline and/or fine.  Waiting on NHL Department of Player Safety for ruling.  (May not come until Saturday).  There was no penalty on the play.

“There’s just a few more hours, that’s all the time I’ve got” — until Christmas break for the Sharks.  They actually get an additional day (23-26), while most of the league is just off from Christmas Eve through Boxing Day (24-26).  So there will be a mental aspect to focus on the game rather than reflect on the holidays.

Sharks had an optional practice on Sunday before flying to SoCal, after a perfect homestand.

The Ducks are returning home from a 9-day, 5-game road trip.

Sharks will be without Mueller (WJC), Nieto (ankle), Brown (broken bone), Kennedy (shoulder), Torres (knee). Ducks will be without Perry (knee) and Beauchemin (broken finger); Lindholm should be back from nursing back injury.

Starters: Niemi vs Anderson

141220 – post game Blues @ Sharks

Pregame news/links

Sharks got goals from Desjardins, Vlasic and Burns to beat the Blues in OT 3-2.  Sharks took no penalties, and got the game winner on the PP.

With an assist tonight, Thornton now tied at 22nd with Phil Esposito for career assists.

First period was a bit of a cagey testing the opposition (it was more than a YEAR between games).  Sharks scored first, then the Blues came back to take the lead.  But the Sharks notched a last minute goal to tie it, and another last minute goal to win in OT.

Two more meetings against the Blues this season.

141218 – postgame Oilers @ Sharks

Pregame news/links

Sharks had a slow start, fell behind in the first.  But rallied to lead in the second, only to fall behind (again).  In the final frame, the Sharks physicality finally came out and the Sharks scored two to win, holding off the Oilers late in the third (missed icing with 1.7 seconds notwithstanding).

Matt Tennyson notched his first NHL goal, the first former Junior Shark to do it for the NHL Sharks.

Sharks are now second in the Pacific Division with 40 points.

Sharks haven’t played since Saturday, with 3 game winning streak (and 6 game home winning streak). They had the day off Sunday (and team family party that evening), with practice Monday (with hospital visit), Tuesday (and team “Holiday Assist” party) and Wednesday. (13, 18, 81 and 83 have NOT been practicing. Nieto has been ruled out for game against Oilers; may not make it back into lineup before Christmas break. The other three are out “long” term it sounds like.)

The Oilers keep losing; losing streak now at five games. They lost Tuesday in Arizona, even after firing head coach Dallas Eakins on Monday, with GM Craig McTavish and AHL bench boss Todd Nelson taking the reins.  (Some pundits are calling for a wholesale firing of the “Old Boys Club” in Edmonton – including the entire scouting staff which has done a horrendous job drafting, the GM and most of the front office.) From the outside, not much has changed, and the status quo is not working.

Niemi starting; Scott in for McGinn. Scrivens in for Oilers.

141213 – postgame Predators @ Sharks

Pregame news/links

Sharks win.  Extend their home winning streak. Niemi returns to the net and gets a shutout. Vlasic returned to the lockout.

And my section won free yogurt!

Thornton-Hertl-Pavelski scored the game winner 5:01 into the first. Thornton got an empty netter for insurance late in the third.  Even though the Predators pushed hard in the third, they could not get past the Sharks defense. And their frustration ended up with a very physical game.

McGinn and Preds Weber fell on each other and had to retire to their respective dressing rooms for repair.  Both returned to the ice.
