150215 – pregame Lightning @ Sharks 5pm PT

TV: CSN CA

Sharks return home for Sunday’s game before they head out on the road for two games (before the outdoor game on Saturday).  The only good thing about this schedule, is that the team will not have to “live” in the hype at home until the day before the game.

Sharks may have Vlasic back in the lineup Sunday (which would probably mean that Demelo would be heading back to AHL to open up a roster spot). Braun is getting close to returning as well (perhaps before Saturday’s outdoor game).

The Lightning are hitting the road for five being soundly beat by the Blues at home on Thursday. They are sitting 2nd in the Atlantic and 3rd in the Eastern conference.

Finally Todd McLellan gets his 300th win, and becomes 2nd fastest coach to do so.

And the Sharks broke the streak of giving up at least a goal in each period.

More later?

150211 – retirement of Nabokov and postgame Capitals @ Sharks

Pregame news/links

The Sharks are missing two of their top D — Braun and Vlasic — badly.  A number of breakaways (zebra interference/non-call notwithstanding) that should have been stopped.

Yes, some of the “kids” have stepped up and are doing well.  But they are not the grizzled veterans and experienced journeymen they are replacing in the lineup.

Plus some video from Nabby’s presser and other things from Nabby’s retirement.

A few postgame/recap stories/links from the previous game.  Plus pregame stories for Wednesday’s game.

Wednesday’s game may be overshadowed by a noon presser where Evgeni Nabokov is expected to announce his retirement (live on CSNCA and NHL Network, sjsharks.com).

The Sharks are still looking for consistency, which is not made easier with half a dozen players on the IR. Sharks are looking for their first win (and last opportunity for one) on this three game home stand.

The Sharks will have to overcome the “father” impact, again, as Washington has brought along their dads on this four game road trip which starts against the Sharks. The Caps have not won in regulation in NorCal since 1993.

More after morning skate.

150209 – pregame Flames @ Sharks 7:30pm

TV: CSN CA

Satellite radio (click for specific station)

The Sharks are coming off a loss to Carolina Saturday, where they ended it a one goal game. On Friday, the Flames lost to Pittsburgh 4-0.

On Sunday, the Sharks put Vlasic on the IR and recalled Demelo.

So, the question for Monday’s game is: will the Sharks come together and play their hearts out, or they be beat down by the Flames who have come out on top so far this season against the Sharks?

They’ll have to work a little harder as the Flames’ dad are on this trip with them.

Hiller the probable starter for the Flames. Glencross returning to the lineup.

Sharks have one win in four games against the Flames thus far this season.

But a late breaking story may overshadow the game: the Sharks acquire Evgeni Nabokov from Tampa Bay (for future considerations). (It’s assumed he’ll announce his retirement on Wednesday)

Niemi for the Sharks as starter.  Wingels back in the lineup; Tarasov to IR.

Pregame news/links

Vlasic was a late scratch (injury or illness — read between the lines).

Sharks did miss Pickles.  But after giving up a goal in the first, two more in the second, they came back to tie the game early in the third.  But they could only match one of the two more the Canes scored.

Couture notched his first against the Hurricanes. Hertl notched two.

150205 – postgame Sharks @ Canucks

Pregame news/links

On Thursday, the Sharks took to the ice against the Canucks (they were 0-2 on the season) about 24 hours after they lost to the Flames in Calgary, barely avoiding a shutout.

For the Sharks, Mirco Mueller returned to the lineup, and Daniil Tarasov made his NHL debut, while Patrick Marleau played his 1,300th game.

Sharks’ Irwin started off the scoring in the first, and for the Canucks it went down hill from there, giving up two goals in each of the second and third periods, but eeking out a goal to avoid a shut out with less than two minutes left.

Karlsson continued his strong play, notching the GWG in the second. A high stick on Tarasov not called by refs (would have resulted in 4min PP). Vancouver had goal disallowed because it was batted in. Chris Tierney scored his first NHL goal.

McLellan is now at 299 NHL career coaching wins.

Sharks had six rookies in the lineup.

Team “off” on Friday.  (Back at it Saturday to host Carolina)

Sharks need to win to avoid dropping further in standings (and raising Canucks up).  Will Tarasov get his NHL debut?

Niemi assumed starter.  Unlikely there will be morning skate as it’s a back-to-back.

Tonight’s game should be Patrick Marleau’s 1300th. If so, he’ll be the youngest to reach that milestone, and one of only 11 to do so with one organization.

Mueller returns to Sharks lineup.
