141016 – Sharks @ Islanders
Sharks and Islanders both have two points in every game they’ve played. That will change.
I’m on the road @ the game. You’re on your own for news/updates.
141014 – Sharks @ Capitals postgame
Sharks took a three goal lead, chasing the starting goalie. However the Caps fought back to tie the game in regulation, but lost in the shootout with Pavelski notching the only SO goal.
First period belonged to the Sharks, with the two Sharks players making their season debut doing all the scoring. Matt Irwin notched two goals, John Scott with one (his third career goal). This resulted in starter Holtby being pulled and Peters making his Capitals debut less than half way through the period. Sharks won 72% of faceoffs in the period.
And the game went downhill for the Sharks from there. Second period was mainly Caps, with the Sharks holding on to a 4-3 lead by the end. Third period saw the Caps come back and the score was tied at 5-5. OT resolved nothing.
In the shootout, Pavelski scored in the only goal on either side.
Sharks still need to be concerned with consistency through 60 minutes (so they don’t have to go beyond regulation).

141014 – pregame Sharks @ Capitals 4pm
The boys get on a big white plane with a Shark on the tail for their first long road trip of the season. (Flying out Monday) Road trip starts in Washington, DC with game against the Capitals. Then they travel to Long Island for their last (barring Stanley Cup miracle) trip to Nassau Memorial Auditorium to play the Islanders. Next, Newark to play the Devils, followed the next day with a tilt against the Rangers at MSG. Finally, the boys head to Boston to wrap up the trip against the Bruins. (Note — I’ll be traveling to those three middle games, so game news may be infrequent, incomplete, or not happening. But I will blog about my trip on my return. I’ll be the one in teal, if you’re looking.)
As of departure, the Sharks have 12 healthy forwards (including Scott), 7 healthy D and 2 perfect goaltenders. Brown is nursing “upper body” injury after blocking puck on Saturday, and not expected to play on this trip but is traveling with the team; Sheppard and Kennedy (both on IR) are also traveling with the team; perhaps they could be activated to play. (Did not see update on Goodrow specifically, but I’m thinking he’ll be traveling with the team as well.)
Tuesday news from skate: With Brown out, Scott will be making Shark debut. Scott Hannan to play 1000th game tonight. Niemi vs Holtby in net battle.
Jamie Baker was on NHL Live (NHL Network) this afternoon and indicated that his wife, parents and other family and friends will be in attendance for tonight’s game.

141011 – postgame Jets @ Sharks
Stalock notched a shutout, but the Sharks were 0-for-8 on the PP, and didn’t make one shot in the third period. (Things for the Sharks’ coaches to work on before leaving for the upcoming five-game road trip.)
Sharks set a new franchise record with two shutouts to start the season, and a NHL record with starting the season with two shutouts from two different goalies.
Nicer to start the season 2-0 than the alternative.

141008 – Sharks @ Kings postgame
So, the captains (or more precisely, the alternates — no C) were unveiled: Thornton, Marleau and Pavelski (tonight). Vlasic will also wear an A. (Unclear how they will split the wearing.)
Sharks ignored the pregame ceremonies and celebrations and came out hard, spoiling the King’s season opener and Stanley Cup banner raising ceremony. One goal in the first period, three in the second, which resulted in Kings’ goalie Quick getting the rest of the night off and Jones taking the net. And notched a shut out for Niemi, even with a 5-on-3 PK for the last 67 seconds of the game.
Nice to get some scoring from the new 3rd line, and special teams.

Game 1, road game 1. (NHL game 0004)
TV: NBCSN with Dave Strader, Brian Engblom
Radio: Sharks Radio Network; Sirius 211 XM 218 (LAK feed)
UPDATE: Niemi vs Quick expected matchup in net. Irwin scratched on blueline. Mueller and Tierney to make NHL debuts.
Sharks can’t escape the national spot light after their historic disappointment in the opening round. They didn’t even get to play in May. And it’s no mistake that the Sharks are facing the Kings watching the Stanley Cup banner raised as one of four games on opening night.
The hype this off season has focused on the collapse and the (apparent lack of) reaction to said collapse. There were no changes in coaching or general manager (NHL) while many pundits were calling for one or both. And the leadership is changing with the captaincy stripped from Joe Thornton (and assistancy from Marleau); again pundits wonder why they are still on the roster (rather than having their hand forced to waive their NTCs and find greener pastures).
My take on these changes are the following:
First, if you fire the coach and/or GM, are there internal candidates ready to step into those positions that will be better? (No) Second, are there equivalent or better available people out there to take the positions? (No at the time, and highly unlikely most of those that did come available over the course of the summer could do a better job.)
Next, while a disappointing situation for Thornton and Marleau, it has motivated them for the upcoming season. They are not getting any younger, so perhaps it’s just “time” to change over the leadership. Even if the two players were willing to waive their NTCs (and they weren’t), it’s highly unlikely the Sharks would be able to trade these guys for same/better offensive production (without having to “over pay” and under value these two players). Who are my candidates for leadership? Pavelski (first American captain of Sharks?), Couture, and Vlasic.
The Sharks shipped out Boyle, Havlat, Stuart. Burish returns to health. And it looks like Mirco Mueller and Barclay Goodrow will start the season on the NHL roster (maybe more rookies; waiting for the final movement(s) to be announced). Update: rookies Tierney, Hayes and near-rookie Tye McGinn are on the roster as well; Goodrow is nursing sore hand and will start the season as a non-roster player. That leaves 2 G, 7 D, 13 F (plus Goodrow non-roster; Kennedy, Sheppard on IR; Torres on LTIR).
While Nikolay Goldobin had some great moves at training camp, he is heading off to Finland for the season. (And it may be IIHF transfers that helped with that decision.)
Now on to the game. It’s the season opener for both teams. Kings will raise their Stanley Cup banner (will the team wait in the dressing room after warmups or will they come out and be on the bench to watch the raising? — Sharks will stay in the dressing room).
Starters: Have to think that Quick will start for the Kings. But will it be Stalock or Niemi for the Sharks? Wait and see (morning skate should be over ~noon ish).
Kings want to put a stamp on their season and potential dynasty. Sharks want to come out sell and meek out a small measure of revenge for the playoffs.
Let’s show the rest of the league how rivalries play out.
