Sharks vs Jets 160407

And the Sharks set a new franchise record for road wins.  Now the last two home games to finish the regular season.  Sharks cannot win the division, so they’ll finish either 2nd or 3rd.

Jones got the night off (more rest) and Reimer got another shutout, as the Sharks win 3-0 over the Wild.  (But the Predators beat the Avalanche in regulation, so the Wild backed into clinching their playoff berth.) Sharks max points 100, and with Ducks and Kings both at 99 points and facing each other tonight, one will get 101 points, meaning the Sharks cannot win the Pacific division.

Sharks still have a chance at 2nd in division.

Jones starting.  Zubrus out; Tierney in.  Neither Vlasic nor Nieto returning to the lineup (yet).

Sharks had a pretty good 59:45 in Monday’s game (excluding that 15 seconds when they gave up two on the PP).  But a win is a win.

On to (extremely cold) Winnipeg.  Sharks would love to give the Jets’ a losing streak, and add to their win streak.  They also would like some redemption after the egg they laid hosting the Jets recently.

Hellebuyck starting for Jets.  Stalock may be in nets for Sharks.

With a 5-10 home record in the first three months of the season, the Sharks hope to improve that on their current home stand, with their first three games of 2016.

Jets are coming to San Jose as the second stop on their five game road trip (longest of the season). Trip started with 2-4 loss in Arizona, their sixth straight road loss. Coach Maurice is looking for answers.

Sharks have had two days off and don’t play next until Thursday, so the bench could get real short if the team gets behind. Sharks are hoping a healthy roster will allow players to slot in where they can play best (and win games).

Update: Jones vs Hellebuyck (starting goalies)

150317 – postgame Sharks @ Jets

Tonight it was the Sharks unable to sustain the pressure of the first ten minutes of the game. (Actually, 13:01, the amount of time Niemi was in net, giving up three goals on eight shots.)

Sigh.

The loss pushes the Sharks further down an even larger mountain they have to conquer to make the playoffs.  (Stats someone on twitter quoted is that the probability of the Sharks making the playoffs is down to ~6%)

Regardless of their playoff status, the team should have the pride to play hard for 60+ minutes every night.

Sharks hit the road, with injured forward Mike Brown on the plane (and hoping to return to play before the end of the road trip).  First up, Winnipeg.

Pregame news/links

Sharks start a stretch of four games in six nights with a win.  But Hertl took a puck to the face in the third and did not return (reported that picture of him has cut on upper lip).  Karlsson also had a hit to the head, but returned after his quiet time and concussion protocol checking.

The Sharks’ Vlasic scored with 4.5 seconds left to win the game.

Sharks almost had another goal when a puck trickled down the back of Jets’ Hutchinson’s back to the ice just “outside” the goal.  So close.

Quick international flight to (still cold) Minnesota to face the Wild on Tuesday.

There is exactly ONE NHL game on the schedule Monday.  (Some may be paying attention to the WJC gold medal game — Russian Sharks prospect Nikolai Goldobin playing for Gold– which begins at 5pm as well; Bronze game starts at 1pm with Swedish Sharks draftee Julius Bergman playing.)

Joe Thornton has been put on IR (eligible to return Thursday in St Louis); Freddie Hamilton has been recalled. Micheal Haley has been returned to AHL Worcester (and Mirco Mueller is heading back from WJC).

Hutchinson seems to be the starter for the Jets.  Haven’t seen clarification of who’s starting for Sharks, but my guess is Niemi (and Stalock tomorrow).

Pregame notes

Stalock notched a shutout, but the Sharks were 0-for-8 on the PP, and didn’t make one shot in the third period.  (Things for the Sharks’ coaches to work on before leaving for the upcoming five-game road trip.)

Sharks set a new franchise record with two shutouts to start the season, and a NHL record with starting the season with two shutouts from two different goalies.

Nicer to start the season 2-0 than the alternative.

141011 – Home Opener ** Jets @ Sharks 7pm pregame

Winnipeg opened their season the day after the Sharks in Glendale, but lost key player Evander Kane (for longer than day-to-day.

Sharks had a couple of days of practice after their season opener.  No guys returning from injury (yet), but Eriah Hayes was waived Friday, cleared waivers Saturday and assigned to AHL Worcester.

Stalock starting for Sharks.
