Sharks had terrible problems with the puck/ice, not helped by the Devils who swarmed the home guys every time the puck was in the offensive end. Sharks lose 0-3.

Meanwhile, the Caps seem to be steam rolling through the league with the best record.  They lost in OT to the Kings on Wednesday. And do have something special to play for tonight:

They’ve set a record for twelve consecutive one-goal games. While in LA, Ovi had a dinner date with the Great One.  Caps’ Mike Richards talks about the encouragement he’s received through his career from DeBoer.

If we go with the every-other-game platooning of goalies, that means Reimer’s up.  Tennyson out.  Wingels questionable.

And they’re off!  Sharks are on their first cross country trip of the season.  A chance for the team to bond, and the Eastern Conference pundits to see the mettle of this season’s team teal.  The trip starts in Washington, then three games in/near NYC before heading home to host the Kings. Very similar to the five game road trip, that included Boston, last season.

Sharks took care of business in their home opener, with Jones notching a shut out and Marleau with two goals —  the only scoring of the game.

First up: Washington Capitals, last season’s home for Joel Ward.  (View of Ward’s return from the other side. Ward looking for his first point against the Caps.)

“No goalie has as many shutouts in as few career games as Martin Jones, ever.  Eight shutouts in 36 games played.”

Ovechkin is historically an offensive force; 1-1=2 in first game.  So the Sharks will need to ensure he’s covered defensively, AND get goals past Holtby (probable starter), to win this one.  Coach Trotz was not impressed with the team’s play in their season/home opener, even though they won. But there is pressure on the team to win.

Time to prove that Teal is Real.  And should be ranked a better team than the Caps. Caps may have issues on faceoffs after off-season personnel changes.

Sharks morning skate cira 8:30am PT; more will be known about starters and if DeMelo will get his NHL debut scheduled.

150211 – retirement of Nabokov and postgame Capitals @ Sharks

Pregame news/links

The Sharks are missing two of their top D — Braun and Vlasic — badly.  A number of breakaways (zebra interference/non-call notwithstanding) that should have been stopped.

Yes, some of the “kids” have stepped up and are doing well.  But they are not the grizzled veterans and experienced journeymen they are replacing in the lineup.

Plus some video from Nabby’s presser and other things from Nabby’s retirement.

A few postgame/recap stories/links from the previous game.  Plus pregame stories for Wednesday’s game.

Wednesday’s game may be overshadowed by a noon presser where Evgeni Nabokov is expected to announce his retirement (live on CSNCA and NHL Network, sjsharks.com).

The Sharks are still looking for consistency, which is not made easier with half a dozen players on the IR. Sharks are looking for their first win (and last opportunity for one) on this three game home stand.

The Sharks will have to overcome the “father” impact, again, as Washington has brought along their dads on this four game road trip which starts against the Sharks. The Caps have not won in regulation in NorCal since 1993.

More after morning skate.

141014 – Sharks @ Capitals postgame

Pregame notes

Sharks took a three goal lead, chasing the starting goalie.  However the Caps fought back to tie the game in regulation, but lost in the shootout with Pavelski notching the only SO goal.

First period belonged to the Sharks, with the two Sharks players making their season debut doing all the scoring.  Matt Irwin notched two goals, John Scott with one (his third career goal).  This resulted in starter Holtby being pulled and Peters making his Capitals debut less than half way through the period. Sharks won 72% of faceoffs in the period.

And the game went downhill for the Sharks from there. Second period was mainly Caps, with the Sharks holding on to a 4-3 lead by the end. Third period saw the Caps come back and the score was tied at 5-5.  OT resolved nothing.

In the shootout, Pavelski scored in the only goal on either side.

Sharks still need to be concerned with consistency through 60 minutes (so they don’t have to go beyond regulation).

141014 – pregame Sharks @ Capitals 4pm

The boys get on a big white plane with a Shark on the tail for their first long road trip of the season.  (Flying out Monday)  Road trip starts in Washington, DC with game against the Capitals.  Then they travel to Long Island for their last (barring Stanley Cup miracle) trip to Nassau Memorial Auditorium to play the Islanders.  Next, Newark to play the Devils, followed the next day with a tilt against the Rangers at MSG.  Finally, the boys head to Boston to wrap up the trip against the Bruins. (Note — I’ll be traveling to those three middle games, so game news may be infrequent, incomplete, or not happening.  But I will blog about my trip on my return. I’ll be the one in teal, if you’re looking.)

As of departure, the Sharks have 12 healthy forwards (including Scott), 7 healthy D and 2 perfect goaltenders.  Brown is nursing “upper body” injury after blocking puck on Saturday, and not expected to play on this trip but is traveling with the team; Sheppard and Kennedy (both on IR) are also traveling with the team; perhaps they could be activated to play. (Did not see update on Goodrow specifically, but I’m thinking he’ll be traveling with the team as well.)

Tuesday news from skate:  With Brown out, Scott will be making Shark debut. Scott Hannan to play 1000th game tonight. Niemi vs Holtby in net battle.

Jamie Baker was on NHL Live (NHL Network) this afternoon and indicated that his wife, parents and other family and friends will be in attendance for tonight’s game.
