Sharks @ Blues Western Conference Final Game 1 160515

And away we go.

Series preview/predictions

Series opens Sunday evening.  Sharks are opening the Tank (free tickets required – sold out) for away game 1 viewing, and distributing to the first 500 fans a Jo Pawvelski rally towel.

Most pundits are predicting a hard fought series.  Game 1 should be the “feeling out” game.  But I expect both teams to be physical and pushing to the edge (of penalties) to test the mettle of their opponent.

In the season series, the road team prevailed, so the Sharks should hope to rekindle their road prowess to start the series.

Sharks – Blues Western Conference Final preview

Sharks and Blues will be facing each other for the fifth time in the playoffs.  (Each team has won two series.) This is the first conference finals meeting.

Guarantee: one of these teams will be in the Stanley Cup Finals.  The Blues haven’t been in the Finals since 1970.  The Sharks have never been.

Sharks forwards average 28.6 years old; Blues 27.2.  Sharks defense averages 28.4 years old vs Blues at 26.5.  So, the Sharks have the experience, by 1.5-2 years.

Sharks have the slightly (3/100s of inch) taller, but lighter (2+ pounds) forwards, but the shorter (1/2 inch) and heavier (~10 pounds) defensemen, than the Blues.

Sharks were 2-1-0 against the Blues this season.

(Regular season stats…) Blues averaged three more hits/game, but two fewer blocked shots/game. Blues had less than half the giveaways that the Sharks had. Sharks averaged 1:39 less in PIMS/game than Blues. Sharks scored 18 more goals in the season than the Blues, but gave up 10 more.  Sharks have the better power play (about 1%), and drew more power play opportunities.  Sharks had 63:39 power play time differential compared to the Blues 89:10 more PK time than PP.

Of course, regular season stats mean little in the post season.  The Sharks have lead the league in playoff power play effectiveness (30.9%; highest among remaining playoff teams).  So, the Blues need to be disciplined, or the Sharks can take advantage. The Sharks have been the more offensive team (3.42/game vs 3.14/game) and better defensively (2.33/game GA vs 2.43 GA/game).

So, how will games play out?  On the physical side, definitely.  But the Sharks seem to have the offensive and defensive advantage.  But that’s all on paper.  You have to play the games.

Of the teams remaining, the Sharks have traveled the most in the postseason (and this year, the most in regular season).  But the series will be fairly equal travelwise, once things get going.  Sharks may have the advantage based on their research and work with Stanford sleep  center to counteract jet lag, etc., as they do so much traveling; the Blues may not be as prepared.

Another wrinkle… The NHL has an agreement with Showtime for a weekly summary show.  Debut (first week) is May 20.  So, the guys will be having cameras hanging around as they practice, prepare, and play.

Prediction: Sharks in 6

Reimer was perfect against the Coyotes, getting his second shutout with the Sharks as Ward, Hertl and Pavelski got the goals past Smith, even defending strong through some 2-man disadvantages.

Elliot to start for the Blues, who shut out the Canucks 3-0 on Saturday, on his return from injury. The Blues are completing a five-game road trip.  The Blues are pushing for points to gain on division leading Dallas, two points ahead.

Sharks have won the two previous games against the Blues this season, and St Louis is hoping to improve their defense to avoid a season sweep.  On Star Wars night, the Sharks are hoping the Force is with them, and not that the Blues have the Schwartz with them.

Jones is possible as the starter Tuesday.  More after morning skate.

Sharks seemed to lose energy and could just not make up the difference in Carolina. Two days off (including many members of the team taking in an AC/DC concert) and the boys are ready to face the Blues. Mueller was reassigned to AHL San Jose after Friday’s game. Goodrow was recalled Sunday.

The Blues’ Steen is out for 4+ weeks, injured in Saturday’s game; but goalie Allen has been activated from IR. On Sunday, they called up Jaskin and Schmaltz from the AHL.

Update: Sharks trade Torres and two 2nd round picks (2017, 2018) to Toronto Maples Leafs for D Roman Polak and L Nick Spaling. Won’t be joining the team until maybe Colorado (takes a few days for US work visas to get figured out). Jones expected to start.

Sharks lost a one goal game, breaking their point streak and winning streak.  But the rust should be off and the desire turned up for their next game.

They’re traveling into St Louis, for their first trip this season.  (And the second, and final, trip of the season is later this month.)

The Blues won in Nashville (1-0) on Tuesday.  Schwartz continues to rehab from broken ankle, but won’t be available for Thursday’s game.  Paajarvi returned to play on Tuesday. G Elliot has been playing in the zone.

Guessing it’ll be Jones vs Elliot.

Sharks went 2-1 on the three game road trip, but a 7-2 loss is not a warm fuzzy way to end it.  (Kinda a repeat of the 7-2 loss before the Sharks hit the road with the loss against the Blues.  Bleah.)

Defensive play could not keep the Blues away from the net, and the Sharks were not able to be offensive enough to overcome that.

Is this a case of one team just “having” the Sharks # this season?

Sharks return home, have practice scheduled Friday, and will host the Rangers on Saturday.  (Hoping they can play a lot better, with more energy, than the listless 4-0 shutout they suffered in Manhattan in October.)

And rookie Melker Karlsson notched another goal, bringing his goal-scoring streak to four games.

Sharks start their second half of the season, and finish up a three-game road trip in St Louis; they have won the last two games, without Thornton in the lineup.  (He’s eligible to return to play from the IR in time for this game, but a roster move would be needed.) Sharks took their CBA-mandated day off on Wednesday in St Louis.

The Blues return from the road, including blowing out the Sharks last Saturday, and the Coyotes on Tuesday, for a lengthy home stand (three weeks, including ASG break). Brodeur, Allen and Elliot remain a “three headed” goaltending “monster”; no changes are currently planned. TJ Oshie’s hat trick against the Sharks propelled him to #1 NHL star of the week.

Niemi vs Elliot.  Thornton still out.

The Sharks were booed, and many of the fans left before the end of the game.

Poor work ethic, bad execution.  Sharks gave up 7, including 2 power play goals, and an Oshie hat trick. One crazy bounce off defender and “impossible” angle goals against I can reserve my disdain.  But Niemi wasn’t the one who was trying to get a shot on the Blues’ net; seemed about 15 minutes between the first and second SOGs.

Pavelski played his 600th game, and notched his 20th goal of the season.

More later (maybe)

After their win Wednesday, the team flew home, taking the day off Thursday.  On Friday, the team hit the ice, including Joe Thornton; he’ll be a “game time decision” on Saturday.

The Blues headed to Anaheim and faced the Ducks Friday evening, losing 3-4; their six loss in seven games, and 5th straight on the road. Brodeur was in nets. Elliot expected to be in net on Saturday. Schwartz expected to return to lineup from broken foot.

This will be the last (regular season) match up between the two teams.

Schwartz activated from IR.

Thornton out.  Niemi in nets.

Pregame news/links

Sharks got goals from Desjardins, Vlasic and Burns to beat the Blues in OT 3-2.  Sharks took no penalties, and got the game winner on the PP.

With an assist tonight, Thornton now tied at 22nd with Phil Esposito for career assists.

First period was a bit of a cagey testing the opposition (it was more than a YEAR between games).  Sharks scored first, then the Blues came back to take the lead.  But the Sharks notched a last minute goal to tie it, and another last minute goal to win in OT.

Two more meetings against the Blues this season.
