Former Sharks on opponent: Torrey Mitchell

Sunday’s night game was a dead first period (teams testing each other?), Vancouver made some noise in the second, but the Sharks took over the third and emphatically shut the door on the Canucks’ hopes for a couple of points.

Montreal is making a California swing.  Mitchell might be feeling it’s like a bit of a homecoming. The Canadiens’ season headed the wrong way when G Price went down with an injury; he’s still out and unclear when/if he’ll return.

As of 6am, Reimer was still in Toronto waiting for immigration paperwork.

Jones announced as starter for Sharks.  Brown claimed by Montreal and expected to be in the lineup tonight.

Sharks managed to get zero goals against the Wild, with their new configuration. A six-game winless streak. Carpenter was returned to the AHL after making his NHL debut Saturday. Before the team left Monday, Ben Smith was recalled from his conditioning stint and Barclay Goodrow was also recalled.  Couture is not traveling with the team on this trip, recovering from emergency surgery to repair an arterial leak in his thigh.

Sharks start a five game cross-country road trip that fills the days before the Christmas break.  They start in arguably one of the most hallowed cathedrals of hockey in Montreal. The team is hoping for a good road trip like the last one they had, not continuing to be mediocre, points from the bottom of the division.  And hoping that the players added over the summer prove out.

Tokarski is starting for the Habs who are starting to count the days before they participate in the Winter Classic against the Bruins in Boston. They host the Sharks and Kings before hitting the road until after the New Year.  Former Shark Torrey Mitchell is expected to be in the lineup after missing four weeks. Paul Byron started the season with the Calgary Flames and was picked up on waivers; he is now centering the top line.  Gallagher is still on the shelf; Price not expected back until the middle of January.

Sigh.  The Sharks desperation was not able to overcome a Vezina candidate, with the home town crowd encouraging him.  (And his dad in town for back-to-back shutouts.)

But Niemi only gave up one.

Sharks are coming off their win in Toronto, Canadiens a win in Carolina.

Habs would like to have a different outcome from the shutout they suffered in California at the Sharks’ hands.

Sharks had an optional skate on Friday.

My guess is it’ll be Niemi vs Price in nets.

Sharks put February behind them (except for honoring Thornton for his play in month), and behind Stalock, shut out the Montreal Canadiens, ending a 3-game losing streak (and breaking the bad home losing streak of February).

Newly acquired Ben Smith (wearing #21) notched goal and assist in his debut in team teal.

Sharks are coming off a month without one win at home. One final game on a short home stand before heading out on one game road trip to Vancouver and returning home. On Sunday, the players stayed off the ice and went off site for a player-only meeting.

Montreal is in town for the first meeting of the teams this season.
