Sharks were 17-0 when leading 2-0, until Thursday.  Oilers’ Maroon indicated that the Sharks wilt with sustained forecheck (known thing), and the Sharks did not answer the challenge.  Definitely something the Sharks need to change or they won’t be long in the playoffs.

Recent signees Jon Martin and Michael Brodinski are now with the Barracuda (and scheduled to make their pro debuts Saturday night).

Dallas limps into San Jose to play their third/last game of a road trip: Russel is questionable; Seguin and Demers are out. The team lost 1-4 to the Coyotes Thursday night, but are 6-2-2 in their last ten. Stars are pushing to win the Central Division.

Donskoi was injured in Thursday’s game and is questionable to play.  Vlasic, Nieto and Tennyson out.  Jones is the scheduled starter.

And another interesting wrinkle:

And concern (for the Stars) with a slumping Niemi.

Sharks fought the Oilers in a very defensive game, but prevailed in the shootout where Pavelski and Donskoi scored, but Jones let nothing in. The first time this season they’ve had a home win streak; four win streak on the line Saturday.  With 3 games in four days, the guys got an unscheduled day off Friday.

Now the Stars come ‘avisitin’. They were in Anaheim Friday night and had a frightening 4-2 loss with Lehtonen in net.  So that may mean that Niemi gets to defend the blue paint for the Stars against the Sharks.

With a healthy team, the Sharks are starting to “fire on all cylinders” now.  Missing key pieces in the first half of the season did not allow DeBoer to put players in positions to succeed, but moreso to stem the hemorrhaging.

Sigh.  Wednesday’s game showed they can fight and be competitive, but they weren’t able to get more than one behind Rinne.  Jones is taking blame for the loss.

The Sharks hit the road for back-to-back games before returning home next week.  On Saturday, they’re in Texas; Sunday Colorado. Sharks recalled Bryan Lerg and Dylan DeMelo to bolster the roster as they’re traveling.

Dallas is leading the Central division with 16 points.  They are on a two-game winning streak.  Jamie Benn is leading the league in points and goals. Dallas is 2nd in PP (27.3%); 10th in PK (85.7%). Sharks are 25th in PP (11.1%) and tied for 16th in PK (80%), in comparison.

Sharks will be facing former Sharks Jason Demers (traded for Brendan Dillon last fall) and Antti Niemi. Niemi is 5-1 this season and has won his last four starts.

DeBoer did not tip his hand which goalie will be starting in Dallas, but with back-to-back games, it’s likely both Stalock and Jones will get starts this weekend.

Elimination from playoff contention. End of a 10 year run in the playoffs (that so many other teams would “love to have such a problem”). And another loss at home.

A loss for either team, and it’s the final elimination from the playoffs for the season.

Sharks have the pride of playing in front of their fans for the last time this season on Fan Appreciation night.  (Which might be on the empty side as the Giants season opener starts 30 minutes before the puck drops.) Gift to fans: Patrick Marleau bobblehead.  Sharks Foundation will be auctioning off game worn jerseys (second half of the team) and selling Easter pucks.

Sharks have recalled (Worcester captain) Bryan Lerg. And with Hertl out with illness, he’s expected to make his NHL debut at age 29.

And led by two goals from Desjardins, the Sharks scored 5 goals to the Stars 2 and are holding onto the 2nd wild card spot, two points ahead of the Kings.

But in many ways, it’s time to forget Thursday’s game and then focus through the hype of Saturday’s game.  It’s a lot more important than just playing for a lot of fans.

And before they even drop the puck, the Sharks are worse off than when the finished the game Tuesday, as they are now hanging on to the last wild card spot (with other teams having games in hand).

The Sharks managed to get out of Nashville before the weather turned even worse (but it did strand Matt Tennyson who was trying to get back to Worcester).

Now, the Sharks face the Dallas Stars.  In a recent game, the Stars lost two of their key players to injury, including Seguin. The Stars have two games in hand and are four points behind the Sharks, so a loss could be providing even more pressure on the Sharks playoff hopes. (Former Shark Travis Moen was put on IR Wednesday.)

This will be the first time Dillon and Demers will face their old team since the trade.

Pregame notes

1 down; 6 to go.
1 down; 6 to go.

Sharks came back from 0-2 and 1-3 deficits to win, scoring four goals in the third.

Joe Thornton broke the tie with former/retired Shark Vincent Damphousse on the all-time scoring list with his empty net insurance goal (1,206th point).  Marleau broke a long goalless drought.  And Burns is becoming a monster offensively, scoring the tying and game-winning goals.

Sharks have to “sleep hard” tonight as they face Chicago tomorrow afternoon.

(While I can empathize with Dallas fans experiencing their 8th loss in a row, considering the Sharks 2nd NHL season, I don’t sympathize.  Yet.  Maybe if they lose 72 games, or 18 in a row.)

Couture interviewed on NHL Tonight (NHL Network) on Arena Cam after game.
