Polak and Spaling are expected to have their work visas and join the team before Wednesday’s game. (Not clear if they’ll be in the lineup.)

Sharks took an early 3-0 lead and pushed back every time the Blues scored, with three players each scoring two goals, and Thornton added two assists to have four points (including an AMAZING no look back hander empty net goal). Tennyson was injured early in the first period with a suspected concussion, and had a nasty over-eye cut.  No update on his condition Tuesday.

The Avs are looking ahead to their next game on Saturday, outdoors at Coors Field. They lost in Vancouver on Sunday. On Tuesday, their alumni goalie (and head coach) Roy filled in for an ill Varlamov at practice; MacKinnon also missed Tuesday practice with illness.  Coach Roy knows he has to focus his team on Wednesday’s game.

So the question of who will start on both sides should be known after morning skate Wednesday.

Update: Jones starting. Polak and Spaling in the lineup.

Sharks vs Avalanche 160126 – recap

That was nice.  Sharks rolled through the Avs 6-1.

Pickard, fighting the flu, managed to play two periods, giving up 4 goals.  Rookie Roman Will made his NHL debut and played (part of) the third period, giving up one goal.  And crazy coach Patrick Roy was pulling his goalie late in the 2nd period, and 15 minutes left in the 3rd trying to tie it up.  (Sharks did get one ENG.)

But there were some defensive break downs and sloppy play with the big lead.

Now Burns and Pavelski travel to Nashville for the ASG.  The rest of the team is off until Monday, with a late afternoon practice before heading out on the road for a game Tuesday.

Sharks played well, but Kings pushed to tie the game late in the third, and scored in OT.

The Avs are coming off their fourth win Saturday night.  Varlamov was named #1 star of the week, but Pickard is expected to be in nets on Tuesday. Skille crashed into the boards Saturday, but is expected to play Tuesday.

Optional practice for Sharks on Monday: Stalock, Tennyson, Zubrus and Brown were the only players on the ice.  Due to that I’m thinking that Jones will start.

Update:  Jones scheduled to start.  Zubrus in; Brown out.

Pickard and two skaters skipped morning skate due to illness.  Will has been recalled to backup Pickard (with Varlamov out), but might have to start.  Perhaps Roy would be signed as an emergency backup goalie?

Sharks scored 4 unanswered goals, including three in the third, to win in LA 5-3 before the break.  Pavelski had two goals, and an assist. Burns and Thornton each had a goal and an assist.  Jones gave up a couple of goals early in the game, but got stronger, and the D kept the puck out of the zone more as well.

Sharks then had five days before this game.  Practice on 12/26 and 12/27 before getting back at it in a double header 12/28. Couture and Ward have returned to practice, but Couture is still out.

The Avs hosted the Coyotes Sunday (losing in OT), before heading to San Jose. MacKinnon has been on a goal drought and lost his “Nine Line” wingers. Iginla scored his 599th goal. Avs are wary of new captain Pavelski, who seems to come up big against them.

Sharks played Dallas on Saturday; Sunday in Denver.

With Stalock playing against the Stars, Jones is scheduled to start against the Avs.

The Avalanche return home after ending a three-game road trip Friday in Carolina with a 2-3 loss.

Former Shark Brad Stuart has been a healthy scratch for all but two games this season.

Sharks had some success with special teams on Saturday, scoring two PPGs and a SHG, but also let in a SHG and two PPG.  DeBoer used his time out to challenge a goal (offsides), but was unsuccessful in the challenge (but like the previous unsuccessful time, did give the team a chance for a “longer” timeout to regroup).

Pregame news/links

Sharks managed goal in second (after scoreless, pretty boring first period), and exploded for four in third (including two empty netters with goalie pulled with about five minutes to go).

And the Sharks officially announce their AHL franchise as the San Jose Barracuda.

Sharks return from their long road trip to a two-game home stand. (Then road, home, 2 for the road to finish out the regular season.)

Niemi is recovering from an apparent cold, so Stalock may get the start.  Tarasov has been returned to Worcester.  Brown is close to returning. Mueller out for the season with a thumb injury (unclear if he might be healed for World Championships). Vlasic is day-to-day with lower body injury (but out for Wednesday).

Reto Berra announced as starter for Avalanche.

Pregame notes

(Had to miss part of the game live for a meeting.)

Seemed to be a high defensive, goalie-dominated game.

Came down to the shootout, and the Sharks scored twice, while none of the Avalanche shooters got past Niemi.

John Scott was suspended by the NHL for two games from Sunday’s game.  Tyler Kennedy was assigned to Worcester for LTIR conditioning stint.

This game will be the first that the two McGinn brothers will play against each other (at any level), excluding games on family rink.  Looks to be Niemi starting for the Sharks.
