Sharks are coming off a home loss to the Canucks.  They just seemed to be off kilter, so the Reimer took the loss (but it cannot be blamed just on him).

Flames are returning home after a four-game road trip, finally snapping a seven-game losing streak, and Ortio’s first win of the season, on their final outing. 2nd to last in the conference, the team is looking at the future moreso than the present. Pundits are worried about how the team can stop Thornton and Burns from making an impact.

Jones starting.

Sharks had the second successful coach’s challenge this year against Chicago, denying former Shark Mashinter the only puck that got past Jones. Jones had 33 saves for his shutout win.  Marleau scored the first (and game winning) goal, with Thornton getting the insurance ENG. 2-2 on four game road trip is much nicer than 1-3.  That was the first game a healthy Sharks lineup faced the Hawks this season, but Dillon left the game after two shifts in the first period with an upper body injury and did not return.

Meanwhile, in Calgary, three top players were late to practice on Monday, so were scratches for Tuesday’s game, a 4-3 victory with 11 F and 7 D dressed. On Wednesday, the three sheepishly apologized. They have another distraction on Wednesday, with Wideman facing Bettman for his appeal of the 20-game suspension for cross checking linesman (appeal decision could take a while). This is the start of the Flames’ Dad’s trip for the season.

The Sharks PK has been successful 16 of the last 17 man disadvantages.

Update: Stalock in net for Sharks.  Dillon out; Tennyson in.  Mueller recalled.

Sharks decimated the Leafs on Saturday, winning 7-0.

Now they head out on the road for a couple before their next home game on Thursday.

Jones is scheduled to start for the Sharks.  Marleau will play in his 500th consecutive start.

Today, Robin Regehr retired from hockey as a Calgary Flame, signing a symbolic contract to do so. Ramo scheduled to start for the Flames.

Sharks still have not won a game this season when they’ve tailed after 20 minutes. While the effort was there to get to within one goal by the final buzzer, there are no points for losing in regulation.

Sharks head to Alberta for a couple of back-to-back games.  First up: Calgary.

And they’ll have to do it without Vlasic, out with a lower body injury, who did not even travel with the team. But they may have Couture, who was activated from the IR before the team left California.  (There were some recalls and assignments to/from the AHL, but it washed out.) Smith put on IR (concussion).

Sharks finally notched a power play goal on home ice, but fall to 3-6-0 at home, losing to the defending Stanley Cup champions. Disappointing, but not the end of the world.

However, there were a few casualties.  Hertl and Wingels were benched for the third period, and called out at Thursday practice.

Braun is out from a staph infection (elbow); no timetable for return.  But it provides an opportunity for Tennyson to show his worth.  Couture is still out after his broken leg, but participated in a full practice with the team on Friday.

On the other side, are the Flames, played Friday in Arizona (losing in OT) before their Saturday game in San Jose. They are sixth in the Pacific Division, 29th in league, with a 3-8-2 road record. Can Sam Bennett be the Flames’ savior?

Ramo played Friday, so logical guess is that Hiller will be the starter for the Flames.

And I’m guessing that Jones will get the start.

Update: DeMelo recalled

A few postgame/recap stories/links from the previous game.  Plus pregame stories for Wednesday’s game.

Wednesday’s game may be overshadowed by a noon presser where Evgeni Nabokov is expected to announce his retirement (live on CSNCA and NHL Network, sjsharks.com).

The Sharks are still looking for consistency, which is not made easier with half a dozen players on the IR. Sharks are looking for their first win (and last opportunity for one) on this three game home stand.

The Sharks will have to overcome the “father” impact, again, as Washington has brought along their dads on this four game road trip which starts against the Sharks. The Caps have not won in regulation in NorCal since 1993.

More after morning skate.

The Sharks are coming off a loss to Carolina Saturday, where they ended it a one goal game. On Friday, the Flames lost to Pittsburgh 4-0.

On Sunday, the Sharks put Vlasic on the IR and recalled Demelo.

So, the question for Monday’s game is: will the Sharks come together and play their hearts out, or they be beat down by the Flames who have come out on top so far this season against the Sharks?

They’ll have to work a little harder as the Flames’ dad are on this trip with them.

Hiller the probable starter for the Flames. Glencross returning to the lineup.

Sharks have one win in four games against the Flames thus far this season.

But a late breaking story may overshadow the game: the Sharks acquire Evgeni Nabokov from Tampa Bay (for future considerations). (It’s assumed he’ll announce his retirement on Wednesday)

Niemi for the Sharks as starter.  Wingels back in the lineup; Tarasov to IR.

Sharks managed one goal (scored by John Scott, his second of the season — career high, doubling this season his entire career output), but gave up 3.  And with those two points, Calgary tied the Sharks in points, and passed them in the standings.

Seems like the Sharks are really missing their depth, sitting on IR: Brown, Braun, McGinn, Torres, Wingels.  Tonight, offense and defense could have improved.

Definitely not a “couldn’t take my eyes off the screen” game.  Sigh.

Back to it tomorrow in Vancouver.

Sharks are on the road for a couple of games in Western Canada.  First up Calgary. Tomorrow Vancouver.

On Wednesday, the Sharks are in the spotlight as the only late game, one of three in the league.

Tuesday night was the first episode of the 4-episode Road to the Stadium Series.  Episode summarized nearly two weeks of play and prep, emphasizing the All Star activities of Brent Burns and time off with Joe Thornton.

Stalock vs Hiller.  McGinn to IR; Tierney recalled.  Optional skate for Sharks, so unclear what the lines/pairings will be.

So, the Sharks did solve Ortio better than any other team this season, getting three past him; but Marleau’s breakaway save could have been the deciding goal.

Instead, the Flames took a fast lead, scoring on their first shot of the game, notched a shortie, and the Sharks had to catch up then take the lead, and give up the tying goal in the third, and lost in early OT.

Couture was told that his cracked teeth were a result of him diving, or a teammate’s stick, so not a penalty.  (Really?  I mean REALLY?)
