Sharks had a late afternoon practice Monday in San Jose (the only week-day practice of the month) before flying to Anaheim.  (Burns participated; Pavelski did not.)

Ducks will be without Horcoff, suspended for 20 games. Fowler is hoping to return from knee injury and Depres could be returning from concussion. Ducks are 3-0-0 in recent games; starting with the Sharks, the Ducks play three straight against divisional opponents, all above them in standings. LW Zolnierczyk has been recalled from AHL San Diego.

It’ll be Anderson vs Jones in the battle from the nets. And Fowler will be in the line up.  Looks like Zubrus will be in and Brown out (on the 4th line).

The Sharks could only get one goal past Fleury, while the Pens got many more behind Jones.  There was nearly a 15 minute period where the Sharks did not have a single shot on goal!  Definitely room for improvement (but only slightly better than some of the stinkers @ SAP this season). Still a losing record at home.

Mirco Mueller was assigned to the AHL Barracuda after Tuesday’s game.

On the road the Sharks go for one game in SoCal. Owen Nolan will be making his broadcasting debut on the radio with Dan Rusanowsky for the game.

Sharks will have their hands full with an improving Ducks team that lost to the Lightning Wednesday night.  (Before they return to SJ for a Saturday game hosting those same Lightning.)

Jones is expected to start on Friday.  (And Stalock may start Saturday.)

A coach’s challenge denied Joonas Donskoi (originally drafted by Florida) his first NHL career two-goal game, but the Sharks pulled out a 5-2 win over the visiting Florida Panthers, with Stalock getting his first win of the season. It was the first home win over the Panthers since 2005! Pavelski did extend his points streak (7 games), but his goal streak ended at 5 games. Fans are still waiting for the first home PPG of the season. Sharks scored first this game, a rarity this season.

This is the second game of a double header at SAP Center on Saturday.  In the afternoon, the AHL San Jose Barracuda (affiliate of the Sharks) take on the AHL San Diego Gulls (affiliate of the Ducks).

Optional practice on Friday for the Sharks, with Torres, Brown and Jones being the only players on the ice.  Brown was wearing a cage, but hopes to be able to get back in the lineup for Saturday (he sat the entire 3rd period on Tuesday, did have some shifts in 2nd after his first period fight; so have to assume the reason for the cage is related to that fight; missed Thursday’s game).

Ducks are hosting the Columbus Blue Jackets Friday evening, so will be flying in after that game for Saturday’s game. Ryan Getzlaf is expected to return from appendectomy for Friday’s game. They won the game, with three goals being first for the season for the respective players.

Last season, the Sharks owned the Ducks. So far, the Sharks are 1-0 over the Ducks. Anderson played Friday, so it could be KHUDOBIN for Saturday’s game in net for the Ducks.

Update: Jones starting for Sharks.  Brown back in the lineup. Stollery assigned to Barracuda; Cundari recalled.

Best summary of the Sharks game #1 against the Kings: One game does not a season make, but it did give a good first impression.  Donskoi made his NHL debut, scored his first goal and was +3 (last Sharks player to be +3 in their debut was Sandis Ozolinsh).  Jones was impressive after that first flubbed save and didn’t let in anything else. (Here‘s a nice description of how the team wants to play.)

Now, a chance to see how the Sharks and Ducks play each other in a game that means something. While the Sharks lost both preseason games, in neither did they have their full lineup.  Last season, the Sharks dominated the Ducks.

Interestingly for the Ducks, Saturday’s game will be their season opener, and their 18th season opener on the road. Silfverberg has been skating with the team (after Torres’ hit) and is expected to be in the lineup.

DeBoer indicated that there are no lineup changes planned for the Sharks home opener (meaning that DeMelo will not make his NHL debut until maybe next week’s road trip).

As usual, the Sharks will have a street party before their home opener, so plan your arrival accordingly.

Milestone: Marc-Edouard Vlasic will become the Sharks leader for games played by a defenseman tonight. He passes Mike Rathje.  Congrats, Pickles.

Stalock scheduled to start.  The 8 skater call ups may get some time in the lineup today, for one last chance to be seen by the NHL brass (for future in-season call ups).

Recap:

First period featured a (reputation?) call of Match Penalty to Torres for head contact (5 min major PK) overlapped by major boarding call to Haley (another 5 min major PK).  Sharks killed both off.  Period ended 0-0.

In the second, Demelo scored first on the PP, but the Ducks answered with two. The second was an excellent screen of Stalock.  2-1 Ducks after 2.

In the third, the Ducks showed they pretty much had their season starting roster vs a lot of AHL players, scoring 3.  Final score 5-1.

Update: Raffi Torres suspended pending hearing with NHL Player Safety department. In person hearing waived (so, they’ll teleconference); being held on Monday.

Back at it tonight.  A few repeating players from Friday, but a lot of the other guys too.

Jones getting his SAP Center debut (unclear if he’ll play a full game). Ward and Martin will also make their SAP Center debuts. Dell to back up.

Karlsson still on the mend; sounds like he might be ready for Tuesday’s game.

Ducks won at home over the Kings Friday night.  Had their morning skate in SoCal before flying north for tonight’s game.

Recap. Sharks owned first.  Ducks came out aggressive in 2nd, and owned 3rd.  Sharks underestimated their opponent (Ducks >>>>>> Coyotes). Sharks seemed to get complacent after that five minute PK and were not as tight defensively.

So, the Sharks let the Ducks score first, but gave them their first regulation loss when doing so and won the season series 4-0-1. (And put a damper on the Ducks’ father’s trip.)

It was an early start, which usually means a few seats get filled late from those not arriving before the 7pm puck drop, but exacerbated by a fatal accident that tied up southbound CalTrain for more than an hour.

Earlier in the day, was the official announcement of five-team AHL Pacific division in California.  AHL President/CEO Dave Andrews stayed for the Sharks game and dropped the ceremonial first puck.

And in a bit of retroness, the upper bowl started the wave (counter clockwise) in the middle of the 3rd period.  (I don’t recall there being a wave done for perhaps a couple of seasons, and then it was clockwise.) Lower bowl attempted to participate as well.

Congratulations to Matt Irwin on his first career game winner.

Third line impressed, and Melker Karlsson is making fans smile!

Nieto took a puck to the face in the first, but returned to the ice in the second.

Sharks were one shy of breaking a franchise record with five goals in a period.

Five players had multi-point nights for the Sharks.

More later?

The NHL is back from the All Star break. The Sharks will be the last team to return to play after the break. The Ducks played on Tuesday (in Vancouver); Andersen got his third career shut out in the 4-0 win.  (They landed in Oakland and spent the night there before busing down to SJ for practice.)

During the break, Mueller was in AHL on conditioning stint; Goodrow and Hertl were also sent down.  All three were recalled before practice Tuesday. (Demelo was not recalled as an 8th defenseman.)

Sharks also signed 20-year old Nikita Jevpalovs (from Riga, Latvia; same home town as Sandis Ozolinsh and Arturs Irbe) out of the QMJHL to an entry level deal.

Sharks Kennedy is out injured (from Tuesday practice) again — his fourth injury of the season; Wednesday afternoon a decision was still being made if a player would be called up. Update: Daniil Tarasov has been recalled; sounds like he could make NHL debut on Saturday.

Thursday’s game is kinda taking back stage to a 12:30 presser (should be streamed on sharks.nhl.com and theahl.com) where the anticipated announcement of movement of five AHL franchises to California is expected. AHL president, NHL deputy commissioner, and representatives from all five NHL franchises will be present.

Niemi, Bryzgalov probable starters.

141231 – Sharks @ Ducks (pre and post)

Sharks didn’t have morning skate due to the  back-to-back games and 5pm start. (And I had a crazy day so the pre and post game blog entries are combined.)

Sharks skated with discipline and determination, after Haley took on Jackman, scoring 4 (with one waived off); with Niemi not allowing anything into his net.

One continuing concern is that excluding the two Joes, it was more than 190 minutes (3+ games) that someone else scored.  It was finally broken when Couture notched an empty net late in the third.

And Niemi had his 30th career shut out.

Hopefully of lesser concern is that early in the first period, Thornton left the ice after a big hit from Stoner; he did not return.  Postgame, McLellan says that it’s not significant. Heal fast, Jumbo.

Pavelski notched two goals (including a key 5-on-3 power play at the start of the 3rd); Couture the empty net.

In off ice news, the Sharks have signed 2014 draftee Rourke Chartier to an entry level deal. And in the WJC, prospects Bergman (and Bergvik) – Sweden and Goldobin – Russia are advancing to the quarterfinals, while Mueller and Rod – Swizterland are heading to relegation.

Ducks scored the winner on a power play influenced tally in OT.

Sharks did get a point (so, did the Kings), but the Ducks are now 8 points ahead.

Melker Karlsson scored his first NHL goal, and Pavelski now has three goals against the Ducks in three games.

Controversy over Scott hit that knocked out Jackman.  May result in supplemental discipline and/or fine.  Waiting on NHL Department of Player Safety for ruling.  (May not come until Saturday).  There was no penalty on the play.
