150329 – postgame Sharks @ Penguins

Pregame news/links

Sharks manage to get one point to end up with a 3-3-1 record on this road trip.  But they were not able to get more than one past the #2 PK, even with a number of advantages, including a double minor in OT; and got no goals behind Fluery in the shootout.

Niemi expected to start. Mueller out, Vlasic out, Hannan may be in lineup (someone(s) getting recalled for this game).  Fluery expected to start for the Penguins (after Greiss started Saturday).

UPDATE : Stalock announces he’s starting tonight. (Niemi a bit under the weather.) Fedun recalled.

Pittsburgh’s Letang was sent to the hospital after being hit into the boards by Coyotes’ Doan; overnight stay.  (Have to think he’s doutbful for Sunday’s game.) Malkin returned from injury Saturday. Update – Letang out with concussion.

And a bit of a recap of Saturday’s matinee: Sharks lost two D through the course of the game (I’m expecting some recalls for Sunday). But the team prevailed in the SO to win.

A win is a win, is a win.

So, on the night the Rangers became the first team to clinch a playoff berth, the Sharks kept the wolves at bay to be out of the playoffs.

Marleau had two goals and an assist, named #1 SOTG.

But, the Sharks had some really weird bounces go past Niemi.

SBN: Winging it in Motown

The 2014-15 season is SOOOO different than 2002-03

My $0.02

The 2014-15 season is so very different from 02-03 (the last time the Sharks missed the playoffs).

First, we’re in the cap era now. (Back then you could “buy” your way out of trouble.) All kinds of contract management now that wasn’t even considered then.

Second, Shark defenseman Gary Suter announced his retirement in the summer of 2002. Arguably a much bigger loss than Boyle not re-signed this past summer.

Third, the team was “out” of the playoffs by Thanksgiving. (Head coach Darryl Sutter was fired the last week of November)

Similarly to this season, the Sharks did not do a lot of signing from the UFA market (unless you consider re-signing Selanne).

Looking at the 2002-03 roster:

  • No player with “double digit” +/- positive rating.
  • Sharks had not one “full time” D man with a + rating in 2002-2003 (Davison was the lone plus rating  — +4 in 15 games). Rathje was blueline-worse at -19. (That season, the team started with “Rat and Rags”, as arguably the top defensive pair, but Ragnarson was traded for McGillis — who didn’t even last the season.)
  • Selanne (28+36=64, -6), Damphousse (23+38=61, -13), Marleau (28+29=57, -10) were the only players with 50+ points on the season.

So, the Sharks have about 1% chance of making the playoffs (they’ll have to run the tables AND have help from other teams).  Low, low, probability.  Team is not just “playing out the string” as some have jobs/new contracts to play for (either with the Sharks or their next team).  But the team will have to find the motivation to play for something other than making the post season.

And there’s the possibility of the Sharks being able to upset the Kings’ playoff hopes in the last game of the season.

Sharks are coming off a loss that all but put the final nail in their coffin for NHL playoffs hopes. Meanwhile, the Red Wings are still in the playoff chase for their twenty-third straight season, but lost to the cellar-dwelling Arizona Coyotes in OT.

Sharks have Torres (LTIR) and Brown (IR) on the shelf. While Brown hoped to be able to get back in the lineup on this road tripo, the Sharks might just shut him down for the season, with playoff hopes so low.

Wings have their own list of walking wounded. Cole, Franzen are out. Datsyuk, Kronwall may return from lower body injury. (Update: Datsyuk not taking line rushes, so still out)

Howard starting for Wings. Niemi for the Sharks.

The Sharks will be facing another hot goalie tonight, the Hamburglar.  He shut the Sharks out in SJ 2/28.

Former Shark Milan Michalek did not take morning skate for the Senators.

A win tonight puts the Senators in a playoff position.  If the Sharks win, they keep their playoff hopes for another day.

Congrats to Worcester Shark captain Bryan Lerg, named AHL POTW.  And Dan Ciampini signed to AHL SPC (from ATO) for the rest of the season.
